To accomplish this, do some research on the company you are applying for. Browse through what kind of work you will be doing for them and go through their company history.

Create a Strong Statement

The best thing to start your resume is with a three sentence statement that outlines who you are. This is the first thing that the hiring manager will view and you are going to want to make sure it helps you get the job you’re applying for.

However, make sure it doesn’t speak about anything you’ve already said in your resume, the last thing you want are reiterations.

The objective of your statement can be generic, but you don’t want to bore your potential employer. Write about your aspirations, strengths, and talents that their business can benefit from.

Identify Your Value Proposition

In order to be a successful marketer, you need a great sense of character, experiences, and skills that you can sell. To help make your resume more effective, you need to be able to define these factors.

This is called a value proposition. Take whatever makes your services stand out from the crowd and promote this to your potential employer.

Ideally, your value proposition should correlate to the position you’re applying for. Since small business and larger companies look for opposite skill sets, it’s important to write down an appropriate value proposition based on your skillset and the job you're applying for.

Provide Statistics

When hiring managers view your resume, they are going to want evidence of the work you’ve done. You can easily do this by providing statistics on things such as:

  • Growth in social media campaigns
  • Audience growth due to integrated SEO and email campaigns
  • Conversion rates
  • Cost per action or acquisition reductions

Appropriate Length

It’s more likely that your employer is only going to have time to look at one page of your resume. That’s why it’s important to make your resume one page if possible. If it exceeds that, there’s a large chance that they won’t continue reading your resume.

For those with a lot of experience in marketing, it may seem difficult to squeeze everything onto one page. In this case, it may be alright to stray onto a second page. However, if you can, try to include just the highlights of your career.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that your skills need to be relevant to the job that you want. This may mean that you need to change your resume for every job you apply to.

Though this may seem like a hassle, it's absolutely worth it. Some companies use software to screen resumes for certain keywords. If your resume doesn’t have keywords that match the job description, it may never even be seen.

Be sure to include these three key features in your marketing resume:

  • Specific Techniques: List out any specific or broad marketing skills you have (content marketing, web design, public speaking, etc)
  • Software Programs and Tools: List the software that you use to complete the above listed techniques (Photoshop, AdWords, etc)
  • Operating Systems and Coding: List all operating systems you are proficient on and any programming you know.

When listing out your skills, try to be as detailed as possible. Stay away from general skills and try not to be too vague.

Include Some Hobbies

If there is room on your one page resume, consider adding a few hobbies. This can give the hiring manager a better idea of your personality and showcase who you are.

Proofread Everything

A simple spelling error can make or break a resume. Be sure you read over everything and keep an eye out for any spelling or grammar mistakes.

Hiring managers also pay close attention to your writing style as well. Make sure every sentence makes sense and represents who you are and what you can do.
